Year 4

A very warm welcome from Miss Petri and Mrs Lines

LSAs: Mrs Hilton, Mrs Necasova and Mrs Antoniou

Welcome to our class page. Here you will find all of the useful information you need in order to support your child’s learning at home.

Year 4 is a year of consolidation; the children will build upon and strengthen the foundations of their learning.  During this year, the children will be expected to become even more independent and self-motivated learners.  They will be given lots of opportunities to develop these areas, whilst still having lots of fun!

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a happy, healthy and successful year in Year 4 and look forward to working closely with you to help your child achieve this.

Reading

Your child will need to bring their reading record and book/s in every Friday.  Please sign their record after hearing them read at the weekend.

We provide opportunities (and support) for the children to change their reading books. They are encouraged to regularly update their reading records themselves.  Please encourage your child to do this on their own.

Guided reading – every child is heard read at least once a week. Although reading ability and enjoyment continues to be important, we will be focusing on developing your child’s inference, prediction, explanation, retrieval and sequencing skills.

Please support your child by asking questions about their reading and hearing them read or read together.

Questions to ask your child when you read together

When we hear children read in school alongside their phonic skills we also support their comprehension skills.

Below you will find a list of possible questions to help you with conversations about your child’s reading. They are not intended to be used all at once or every time you read with your child. Use them at your discretion and where they are appropriate. Happy Reading !!

Spelling

Spelling are given to the children on Friday as part of their weekly Home Learning task. The children are given opportunities throughout the week to learn them, find definitions and write them in context. There will then be a dictation session on Friday where the children are asked to apply their learning.

Please support your child in learning the rules and patterns, extending them by looking at other words with the same patterns, using them in writing tasks and developing dictionary skills.

Handwriting & Pace

Neat, joined fluent handwriting is strongly encouraged, as is the importance of pace. Please use the handwriting policy as guidance to letter formation. Should you need a copy of our school font (Letterjoin) please don’t hesitate to ask.

Maths

Please ensure that your child practises mental maths regularly at home to build up his/her skills in number sense, recall of number facts and his/her ability to manipulate numbers mentally. It is best to keep practices short and as much fun as possible.

The multiplication tables check (MTC) is statutory for primary schools in the 2025/26 academic year, therefore we are having a specific, more targeted focus on this area of fluency with daily activities and the use of online resources.  Multiplication will also form part of the children’s weekly Home Learning.

Home Learning

Home Learning is explained and given out each Friday. It is due back the following Wednesday. If a project has been set, the children will have an extended period of time to complete it.

The children will be given spelling, reading, Maths/English and occasionally RE tasks online.  A home learning task that involves a written task should be completed in pencil (Maths and Science) or hand writing pen. It is vital that Home Learning is completed each week as it supports and consolidates what is being taught in class.

If your child has a specific target such as handwriting, punctuation, vocabulary, please remind them before they start their home learning and support where necessary.
